Meetings: Oases or Sand Traps?

Much like baking a cake or changing your motor oil, there is a reliable best method for virtually all processes, especially the dreaded business meeting.

Meetings are cited by most business people as incredible wastes of time. Yet, considering the wealth of knowledge that gathers in any conference room and the associated costs, one should ponder the value of the process – not just the meeting.

To improve your next meeting, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are minutes published, distributed, and followed-up?
  2. Do meetings always begin and end on time?
  3. Does everyone know why they are attending?

Should you answer no to any of these, you have a productivity opportunity to gain by examining the meeting processes in your organization. From a motivation point of view, meetings have a terrific screw-up potential. By what standards do you live in your organization?
